2007 Summit of Youth Philanthropists Will See More Youth, Communities Impacted

This year's Second Annual Summit of North Carolina Youth Philanthropists will see the convening of even more youth wielding greater funds for the good of their communities.

GREENSBORO, NC - On Saturday, Oct. 27 more than 150 high school-aged youth from across North Carolina will come together for the Second Annual Summit of North Carolina Youth Philanthropists to prepare to decide how and where to grant over $75,000 to help their communities. The funds have been donated from philanthropic organizations across the state and will be entrusted to these youth for allocation. The planning and training for the decision-making is taking place, but actual decisions on how to spend the money will take place in individual communities later in the program year.

Leading To Change, a nationally recognized training organization based in Charlotte, in partnership with NCGives, will present strategies at the Summit to help the youth assess the needs of their communities, techniques to effectively facilitate meetings, and methods to further develop resources in their communities. Community leaders and churches selected outstanding youth from their areas that are committed to giving back to the community for participation in the Summit.

The Summit draws youth from Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Mecklenburg, Vance, and Wilkes Counties. Additionally, the statewide organization NCNAYO (North Carolina Native American Youth Organization) will also participate with youth representing over 20 tribal communities throughout North Carolina.

This Summit marks only the second ever convening of all of these counties for youth philanthropic efforts. Sponsors of the event include NCGives, Foundation for the Carolinas, North Carolina Community Foundation, the Winston-Salem Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

As a partner with NCGives, Leading To Change is a customized consulting and facilitation practice that provides on-the-ground training and technical assistance to ten different youth-philanthropy communities throughout North Carolina. The majority of the training content is based on proven models adapted from the Youth Leadership Institute, Anti-Defamation League, and Co-Motion Guide to Community Organizing. As of September 2007, Leading To Change/YLI has provided over 150 days of on-site training and an additional 2300+ hours of consultation and technical assistance to youth philanthropy initiatives in North Carolina.
